How to resize an image without losing quality
Different places want pictures at different sizes: 1080 pixels square for Instagram, 1280 by 720 for a YouTube thumbnail, 35 by 45 millimetres for a passport photo. This free resizer changes the size of your pictures in a few seconds, with no account and no upload.
It runs in your browser, so the pictures stay on your phone or computer. Choose a percentage, type an exact width and height, or tap a ready-made size, then drop in one picture or a whole folder.
Three ways to choose the size
By percent: 50 percent halves the width and the height, 200 percent doubles them. A 4000 by 3000 picture at 50 percent becomes 2000 by 1500.
Custom size: type a width, a height, or both, in pixels, centimetres, inches or millimetres. Leave one side empty and it follows the picture so nothing is squashed. For centimetres and inches the resizer uses 300 DPI unless you pick another resolution.
Ready-made sizes: Instagram posts, stories and covers, a YouTube thumbnail, a link preview, passport photos, 4 by 6 and A4 prints, and more. One tap sets the exact size.
When the shape is different
A wide picture does not fit a square. When you set both a width and a height you choose what happens: Fit inside keeps the whole picture, Fill and crop fills the size exactly and trims the edges, Add borders fills the size exactly with a coloured border and crops nothing, and Stretch forces the size and can distort the picture.
For social posts and passport photos Fill and crop is usually what you want. For a picture where every edge matters, use Add borders.
Keeping quality
Making a picture smaller keeps it sharp. Making it bigger cannot add detail that was never there, so a small picture enlarged a lot looks soft. You can switch on Do not enlarge small pictures so a mixed batch is only ever shrunk.
The resizer writes JPG, PNG and WebP at the quality you choose, and can write the print resolution into the file. Hidden camera data such as the GPS location is removed by default.
Private by design
Your pictures are resized inside your browser. They are not sent to our servers and nothing is stored.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I resize an image to 1080 x 1080 for Instagram?
- Choose Ready-made sizes, tap Instagram post, and add your picture. It is filled and cropped to exactly 1080 by 1080. Choose Add borders instead if you do not want anything cropped.
- How do I resize an image to a specific size in cm or inches?
- Choose Custom size, pick cm or in, and type the width and height. The resizer turns that into pixels at 300 DPI, or at the resolution you choose in More options, and writes the DPI into the file.
- Can I resize a photo to passport size?
- Yes. Under Ready-made sizes, Print and ID has passport photo 35 by 45 millimetres and the US 2 by 2 inch size, made at 300 DPI. Use Fill and crop to centre your face in the frame.
- Are my pictures uploaded when I resize them?
- No. The resizing runs on your own device, so your pictures never leave it and nothing is stored on our servers.
- Will resizing reduce the quality?
- Making a picture smaller keeps it sharp. Making it bigger cannot add detail, so a large enlargement looks softer. Choose the quality for JPG and WebP in More options.
- Can I resize many pictures at once?
- Yes. Add up to 200 pictures at a time and download them together as one ZIP file.
- How do I keep the proportions when resizing?
- Set only a width or only a height and the other side follows. If you set both, choose Fit inside to keep the whole picture without stretching it.
